Hey there folks...here's some good recommendations for movies. I just rented Million Dollar Baby with some friends---really amazing storyline. Secondly, just saw for $2.00 (wowsers) The Sisterhood of the Travelings Pants. Despite the lame name (they could have done better---Come on!) it was really quite good. If anything, the views of Greece are amazing!!! I really want to go there, there and Tallinn Estonia. I'm definitely going to try to make it there in 2005 or 06, depending!

And, I'm reading Slaugher House Five by Kurt Vonnegut, which also has a strange name, but is really really good. It's about war, antiwar to be exact, and it's really funny!!!!

I just had the coolest dream, I was in Italy on Sicily with Rob's family I think. And we were traveling around, we had just left some place that we absolutely loved, much like Taormina and Orvieto but better. My Italian was improving and I was able to talk to people. We took a bus trip around and landed in some city along the way that I had been to before, this city was sompelace I knew from another dream or another trip, I can't decide which, but it was enjoyable and I felt like I knew the people there. I was saying Ciao left and right and I miss them even now. Today I lived like an Italian went to bed early and slept in just as much. I really needed it though. After my 5 mile run yesterday I was just beat. I'll go running again tomorrow for sure, but you know you need a break sometime. Everybody does. And I realized there is no point in putting undue pressure on myself to perform highly at running, or at this race I signed up for on Labor Day, I should just go, do my best, and end. That is all.

August 27th, i leave for London in 23 days.

I got my Visa for my studies in Britain finally!! So exciting.

I can't wait to get started with this next page of my life...it's just got so much to offer...who knows what will happen. Oh man, I can't wait to live in London, where there's seasons, and fogs, and great museums that are free. Oh I would just die to go to one of those museums right now (well not really, it wouldn't work out right) but you get the point!!

Gotta love this Velasquez portrait. He handles paint so magnificently. No wonder he was employed for all portraits of the Spanish court. It will be interesting to compare him to Titian, who also worked for the same court, 70 or so years earlier. That's something to look into for study in October.

This is Buchenwald, the concentration camp right outside of Weimar. Amazingly, the people of Weimar claimed to have no idea what had happened in this camp only minutes away. The weather the day we went was treacherous, quite clearly reflecting the way we were all feeling.

Finding a Van Gogh Owned Japanese Print:

CAN YOU HELP?Courtauld Institute of Art Appeal to Find Van Gogh’s Lost PrintThe Japanese print Geishas in a landscape once owned by Vincent van Gogh, was stolen from the Courtauld Institute of Art Gallery in 1981. The print, which was published by Sato Torakiyo in the 1870s, appears in Van Gogh’s legendary Self- portrait with bandaged ear, one of the jewels of the Courtauld’s collection. Van Gogh was an avid collector of Japanese woodblock prints, which were bought at small price from dealers such as Siegfried Bing in Paris. He covered the walls of his studio with them, and from the late 1880s began to incorporate Japanese motifs into his oil paintings. Geishas in a landscape appears to have been a favourite example. He first used the print in the painting Japonaiserie: Oiran (now in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam), completed in Paris in the summer of 1887. He returned to it more than a year later whilst living in the Yellow House in Arles, inserting the central motif of two women and Mount Fuji into the background of his Self- portrait with bandaged ear. The work is a poignant expression of personal and artistic anguish painted at a very low ebb in the artist’s life, less than a month after having sliced off his ear following a violent quarrel with his friend the artist Paul Gauguin.It is thought that after Van Gogh’s death his brother Theo gave the print (together with Scene from a Genji Parody by Taiensai Yoshimaru, also in the Courtauld’s collection) to Dr Paul Gachet in recognition of the latter’s treatment of the artist at the end of his life. Gachet’s son Paul Jnr inherited the prints and sold them to a Paris dealer where they were acquired by the art historian Douglas Cooper. Cooper donated the two prints to the Courtauld in 1957.Although Geishas in a Landscape does not have great intrinsic value, the fact that it belonged to Van Gogh gives it art historical importance. The Courtauld’s photograph of the print clearly shows that the corners are damaged from the frequent use of drawing-pins Van Gogh used to fix it to the wall, making it easily identifiable.The Courtauld Institute of Art Gallery will be displaying the photograph of Geishas in a Landscape beside Self-Portrait with a Bandaged Ear, together with the surviving print Scene from a Genji Parody, from 7 February to 31 March 2005 in the hope that the lost print may be rediscovered and returned. To help in the search, the Courtauld is also producing a postcard of the print with an appeal for help in its recovery printed onto the verso.
